Treatment Options

Moffitt is dedicated to determining the cause of pain through advanced diagnostic tests and then easing or eliminating pain using state-of-the-art medical and interventional treatments.

Pain takes many forms. It can be short-lived or long-lasting, it can be mild or severe, or it can effect one or a few organs. Each patient's pain is unique, which is why an individually tailored treatment plan is so important.

Treatment options, the majority of which are performed on an outpatient basis, include:

  • Celia plexus block (CT and fluoroscopically guided) - used to treat upper abdominal pain related to the internal organs.
  • Superior hypogastric plexus blocks - used most commonly for the treatment of pelvic pain related to the internal organs.
  • Stellate ganglion block - used to decrease pain in the face or arm and increase the circulation and blood supply to the affected arm.
  • Facet nerve blocks - used when the physician suspects that pain in the neck or lower back is caused in part by the facet joints of the spine.
  • Intercostal nerve block - an injection of a local anesthetic to the nerve underneath the rib to relieve chest wall pain.
  • Spinal cord stimulation - uses a pacemaker-sized device to stimulate the spinal cord to treat a variety of painful conditions and improve circulation.
  • Neural blockade - helps relieve pain by injecting local anesthetics, with or without cortisone, near a specific nerve or group of nerves to break the cycle of pain.
  • Lumbar sympathetic block - an injection of local anesthetic around a group of nerves in the lower back to relieve pain in the legs.
  • Epidural corticosteroid injections - an injection of a local anesthetic and/or corticosteriod to relieve pain from entrapped nerves in the spine.
  • Sacroiliac (SI) joint block - used when the physician suspects that lower back pain is caused by the SI joints.
  • Epidural injection - an injection of a local anesthetic and/or corticosteriod to relieve pain from entrapped nerves in the spine.
  • Radiofrequency denervation - uses a device that generates heat to interrupt pain pathways and provide relief for a variety of conditions.
  • Spinal drug delivery system - uses a computerized pump to deliver local anesthetics and other pain relief medications continuously into the spine to the block pain signals. It is implanted just under the ski to improve ain relief and avoid external hardware.
  • Botox injections - used for headaches

Interventional pain management procedures and injections are performed in the Perioperative Services area on the second floor of the hospital. All pain management treatments are performed under C-arm fluoroscopy (X-ray guidance).
