For breast cancer radiation treatment, the multispecialty team of experts at Moffitt Cancer Center doesn’t just utilize the latest advancements in techniques and technologies – we develop them. Through extensive research studies, we have been able to refine the delivery of our radiation therapy with pinpoint accuracy and precision. For our patients, this translates to better outcomes through fewer treatment sessions and less discomfort.
Even so, at Moffitt, we firmly believe that it takes much more than state-of-the-art equipment to provide effective breast cancer radiation treatment. The successful delivery of radiation therapy is highly dependent on the expertise of the individuals operating the equipment. In this way, it is our staff that truly sets us apart. Our collaborative team of radiation oncologists has the technical expertise and abilities to precisely perform and administer advanced radiation therapy treatments. Each member is highly experienced in a specific type of cancer, as well as a specific aspect of the planning and delivery process. Additionally, to ensure the best possible care, we tailor a radiation therapy plan specifically for each patient based on the type and stage of cancer, as well as other individual factors.

Some of the breast cancer radiation treatment options available at Moffitt include:
- Standard treatment – Delivered over five to six weeks with three-dimensional computerized radiation therapy (3D CRT) or intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
- Accelerated treatment – Delivered in one week or less through accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) using external beam or internal radiation
- Intraoperative treatment – INTRABEAM® intraoperative radiotherapy is administered in
a one-day treatment during lumpectomy surgery (in the Tampa Bay area, this treatment is available exclusively at Moffitt) - Deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) – Utilized for left-sided breast cancer radiotherapy to protect against long-term radiation damage to the heart
Moffitt’s patients also benefit from streamlined care through which they can receive radiation treatment, chemotherapy, surgery and other treatments all under one roof. And, while our treatment methods can vary, we remain true to a single, overriding goal: to deliver the optimal treatment for each patient on a case-by-case basis.
