Your Ductal Carcinoma In Situ Specialists

The ductal carcinoma in situ specialists at Moffitt Cancer Center are dedicated to diagnosing and treating this common form of breast cancer. They are part of the Don & Erika Wallace Comprehensive Breast Program at Moffitt, which provides diagnostic, treatment and supportive care services for patients with all different types and stages of breast cancer. The expertise and experience of our medical specialists consistently leads to favorable outcomes that allow our patients to enjoy a better quality of life.

The successful diagnosis and treatment of ductal carcinoma in situ may involve many different types of medical professionals who specialize in breast cancer. That’s why the multispecialty team of ductal carcinoma in situ specialists at Moffitt work together and meet regularly as a tumor board to create an individualized treatment plan for each patient. The tumor board includes:

  • Pathologists, who examine tissue samples and check lab tests to determine the presence and nature of the cancer. They continue to monitor changes in the cancer throughout treatment.
  • Radiologists, who use medical imaging, such as MRI and ultrasound, to provide information on the location and size of the tumor. Medical imaging can also help determine a patient’s progress during treatment.
  • Surgical oncologists, who perform surgery to remove cancerous tissues. Since ductal carcinoma in situ is noninvasive, typically a breast-preserving surgery such as a lumpectomy is recommended. In some cases, surgical oncologists may determine that a mastectomy is more appropriate.
  • Radiation oncologists, who choose the delivery method of radiation therapy and develop a plan for treatment. Radiation therapy is typically used following surgery to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
  • Plastic surgeons and breast reconstruction experts, who can rebuild the breast following a mastectomy.
  • Fertility preservation specialists, who let patients know their options for preserving fertility while undergoing treatment.

In addition to our specialists who provide and monitor breast cancer treatment, Moffitt also offers many supportive services, so our patients can receive comprehensive care in a single location. Our patients have access to genetic testing and counseling specialists, social workers, family advisors and other professionals who help meet the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of our patients.

If you’d like to meet with one of our ductal carcinoma in situ specialists, call 1-888-663-3488 or fill out a new patient registration form online. Moffitt does not require a referral to schedule an appointment.
