After being diagnosed with leukemia, finding a doctor who specializes in treating blood cancers is the next step. In reality, however, it won’t be just one oncologist who provides a patient’s treatment. Rather, it will be a team of several doctors working simultaneously to ensure that all of a patient’s needs are being met. At Moffitt Cancer Center, we make the greatest contributions as a team, and our commitment to comprehensive, multispecialty treatment has helped our Malignant Hematology Program routinely achieve patient outcomes that are significantly better than expected.

At Moffitt, our leukemia patients have access to numerous specialists in a single location. Our team includes:

Radiation oncologists
Supportive care providers

In most cases, a medical oncologist will serve as a patient’s primary leukemia doctor. These physicians are specially trained to coordinate drug-based treatments – most notably chemotherapy – for leukemia. Because leukemia affects the blood cells and can travel throughout the entire body, it’s crucial for patients to receive effective, highly targeted chemotherapy plans that can destroy all of the abnormal cells.

Each patient’s primary leukemia doctor works hand in hand with other specialists to manage the patient’s case. Behind the scenes, our pathologists assess each patient’s bloodwork to determine how well treatment is working and whether any changes might be necessary.
